Foreigners are confident in Thai engineer’ skills, hiring a Thai firm to be its refrigerating system consultancy for a food preservation industry, putting Thailand in the world market and generating billions of baht in revenue to the kingdom.
Dr. Abhichit Lamlertpongpana, managing director of I.T.C. Group, a leading refrigerating system technology provider for food preservation in Thailand revealed that last year, the food processing industry has increased in Thailand and Asia. Thailand as a country with prolific agriculture and aquatic animals and one of the leaders in producing food as well as the largest exporter in Southeast Asia with over 10,000 food processing manufacturers, refrigerating system has played a major role in food preservation.
However, the cost of raw material for food processing is not high as they are mostly sourced domestically with high production quantity. Thus, high technology to preserve food is important. In the past, Thailand has to depend on imported technology but currently, the local refrigerating system provider for food processing has more expertise. At the same time, Thai food industry has been successful in entering the world market which leads to a growth in the refrigerating system for food processing along with the increase in exported food. Besides, Thailand has an open trade policy, resulting in a maximize usage of raw material for food processing in the local manufacturers which resulted in more goods and products flocking into the market. Moreover, the change in consumers’ behavior has made food processing manufacturers invest more in frozen food. The frozen shrimp now has the highest export value at almost 100 billion baht with very high quality and well-received worldwide when compared with manufacturers from China, Vietnam, India, or Indonesia. Thailand’s frozen shrimp has high quality because of its quality control system and the freshness is very close to fresh shrimp. It is also the main income from farmers and food processor.
Currently, the change in distribution channel and consumers’ behavior has led to the rapidly growing frozen food industry. As Thailand has a strong production-base compared to the neighboring countries and operators have more expertise, the production has maximized and led to more export. The direction of food industry has switched from producing to replace imported goods to producing for export market, generating higher revenue to the country.
However, when the competition in the world food industry intensified as producers in emerging countries offered low labor cost with similar grade of raw material as Thailand, operators in the food industry have to continuously develop production technology, marketing and management. They also have to produce high value products. Last year, the Thai frozen food industry has value around 100 billion baht or 600,000 tones.
In the past year, I.T.C. Group not only provides refrigerating system for food processing industry in Thailand but also for countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and China where they hired the group to be their consultant for the design and construction of their large international standard manufacturers as well as install a refrigerating system for frozen food industry in the region. This has proven the ability of Thai people in the refrigerating industry in the world market as it not make Thailand well-known but also generates revenue to the country.
